More Divorces Are Taking Place

Generally speaking, more people are getting divorced than they were even a couple of decades ago. In other words, divorce is becoming more common, which in turn leads to less stigma in general for divorced families. The rate of divorce in the U.S. has almost doubled since 1960. That data comes from the Rutgers University National Marriage Project. In total, about 50 percent of marriages today are likely to end in divorce. And the divorce rate has also risen in the Muslim community.

Indeed, back in the 1990s, a sociologist conducted research on the divorce rate among Muslims in the United States, and that divorce rate was just over 31 percent. Even then, the divorce rate among Muslims in the U.S. was significantly higher than in other parts of the Muslim world. For example, in the 1990s, the divorce rates in Turkey and Egypt stood at about 10 percent. Yet now, the divorce rate in the American Muslim community is increasing.

Shifting Divorce Attitudes in the Muslim Community

According to Imam Mohamed Magid, who serves as the vice president of the Islamic Society of North America, “Divorce is on the rise in the Muslim community.” He cited an “increase in divorce from people married for a while” as well as divorce among “those married for a short time.”

Further, Magid clarified, the rising divorce rate in the American Muslim community is not linked to a specific immigrant group or socioeconomic group. To be sure, he said, divorce rates are not linked to “a particular race or ethnic background or class, or only among the religious or non-religious.” While some immigrant communities previously saw divorce as the absolute last option, more Muslims are viewing divorce as something that may be necessary to preserve health and well-being, especially in abusive marriages or in situations where other options have been exhausted.
