Depending on the reason for which your driver’s license was suspended, you will need to request either an informal hearing or a formal hearing. If you are able to have your driving privileges reinstated following a driver’s license suspension, you will need to pay reinstatement fees. According to cyberdriveillinois.com, the website for the Illinois Secretary of State, drivers with suspended Illinois licenses should understand the distinctions between these types of hearings:

• Informal hearings are required for Illinois drivers who have had their driving privileges revoked and their licenses suspended for reasons that do not involve a fatal accident. Informal hearings typically are for drivers whose licenses have been suspended due to a single DUI disposition or “sanctions related to lesser moving violations.” These informal hearings are conducted by a hearing officer, and they are held regularly each week. The outcome of a hearing either can be a full reinstatement of driving privileges or the granting of a Restricted Driving Permit (which generally happens when someone has DUI convictions or other serious sanctions on their records).
